This week we are organizing our trip. Some of you are probably on a trip right now visiting family for Thanksgiving. This is the busiest travel time of the year. When my husband and I lived in California, we traveled back to the midwest for a few Thanksgivings and it was Crazy!!! We decided after we got married to stay put on Thanksgiving and travel during Christmas time. That was a little more manageable. We really prefer driving to flying now that we have small kids. Anyone else feel this way?

Our last flying excursion with kids was over the summer. We went to see my husband’s brother and his family in Connecticut. It was a nice trip but the flying part was tough. It didn’t help that I left my WALLET at home (an hour’s drive to the airport!). I did learn that it is possible to get through security without an ID. Who knew?! But we ended up coming home that night anyway because our flight kept getting delayed and looked to be canceled. We joked that it would have probably taken the same amount of time to get out there if we had driven. 🙂

 This Week’s Goals:

1. Decide when you will go and how you will get there. If flying, the best days to do that are usually Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Try to book at least three weeks in advance and go for the earlier flights. If they get delayed or canceled you have more options later.

2. Give yourself several weeks if you need a passport. It takes a lot of time to get these and if you need vaccines, you will need more time in case they are administered in a series.

3. Schedule a day to recover at home from your vacation. I used to do this whenever possible when I worked for the state of California. I usually needed that day to regroup, get back on the right time zone, do laundry, etc. It made the transition back to work so much easier.

4. Pack lighter then you think you need. I like to choose outfits that work with the same pair of pants or shorts, so I can easily mix and match. Do this with shoes too. You don’t need 10 pairs of shoes for a week long vacation:)

5. Pack as much as possible the day before your trip. Have things at the door or in the car early.

6. Keep your name and contact information on all pieces of luggage both on the outside luggage tags but also inside in case the tags get ripped off.

7. Leave a key with a trusted neighbor. This came in handy for me when I left my wallet at home. I was able to call my neighbor and she was going to FedEx my license to my brother in law’s house if need be.

8. Keep an updated packing list for each member of your family on your computer. It will save you time making a new list each time you travel and will help you to not forget anything.

Tips:

1. Traveling with young kids? Be sure to have a goodie bag of toys and snacks ready to go. I like to get a few new things from places like the dollar bin at Target.

2. Write down your credit card info and keep it in a safe place with you when you travel in case your wallet gets lost or stolen. You can call the credit card companies right away to stop the cards.

3. A week before you take your trip, make a big batch of chili or soup and freeze half. You will be thankful to have something home-cooked and healthy when you return from your trip.

How do you organize for your trip?
